| The high floating lob shot is perfect when you have to get the ball over a green side bunker and stop it very quickly. This shot requires good 'feel' and some practice. To play this shot you must first of all have a good lie. A cushion of grass under the ball will allow the bounce of the sand iron to slide under the ball. (If you have the tight or bare lie then it is safer to play a normal pitch shot into the middle of the green and leave yourself a longer putt.) Stand with your lower and upper body open to the target line and then lay the club wide open (so it is aiming right) as pictured. Move the ball position forward in your stance so that it is opposite the left heel and keep the weight evenly distributed. As you swing the club back focus on a lengthy slow swing, you should have the feeling that the arms are going to control the swing and the hands feeling 'dead'. When you hit the shot you should feel the clubhead strikes the turf fractionally before the ball, as this happens it is very important to keep the club head swinging under the ball and then through to a high finish. Because of the open set-up position the swing path will be out-to-in. With the clubface open the ball will climb up steeply into the air along the target line, landing very softly. The trick to this shot is to trust a long slowish swing, with the hands being very quiet, resisting the urge to help the ball into the air. Remember to trust the set-up position and allow the club to swing under the ball. |
