On the Tee | I often get asked the question, "Is the swing the same for the woods as it is for the irons?" The answer is that one swing fits all, however your approach to the shot must alter and you may have a slight change in your performance keys. It all starts by understanding how high to tee the golf ball. As pictured above, with your woods at least half of the ball should be above the top line of the club. With the modern-day driver this requires quite a high tee, the fairway wood should be teed a little lower and the iron lower again. Since we are trying to sweep the woods on an ascending blow this higher tee allows us to hit solidly into the back of the ball. In contrast the irons require a descending blow and the lower tee helps to do just that. One final note, on the teeing ground avoid playing the shot with out a tee. Even if you like to tee the ball low, use a tee as it guarantees a perfect lie. |
Utility vs Long Irons | Soon long irons will be replaced by these amazing clubs. The only reason for keeping a 1, 2, 3 or even 4 iron in your bag is to hit lower ball flight shots in windy conditions, otherwise make the game easier and adopt a utility club as I have. It is a perfect choice when hitting to long Par-4's or the reachable Par-5's. With its higher trajectory the ball will hold the green and the easier to hit head design, especially when you lie is not perfect, means you can go head and be more confident over the long shots. My advice, go out and get one of these in your bag and never have problems with the long shots again!
